Ahh, Spring!

It finally feels like it has arrived. I am ready for skirts, tank tops, and wonderfully strappy sandals. I always get inspired by the seasons changing- new colors, styles, and photoshoot opportunities. This summer Brian and I are actually going on a REAL vacation- yay! We're doing an Eastern Caribbean cruise, and I am already excited to fluff my wardrobe with a few new pieces from Ruche. It is Anthropologie-esque clothing for way cheaper.
Now I just need to make sure that I work out plenty before then, and maybe tan a little so I don't scare people away with my incredible whiteness. With this warmer weather it has been much easier to get inspired to go running, so no more excuses for me!

Mini Cheese Tarts

Last week my parents came from Sugar Land and my sister came from Denver to stay with us a few days. The day before, I whipped up these little babies, and a few minutes before serving I topped them with fresh kiwi. Here is the recipe...

Easy Mini Cheese Tarts*
INGREDIENTS:
·       1 dozen vanilla wafers
·       2 packages (8 ounces each) cream cheese
·       1/2 cup granulated sugar
·       1 teaspoon vanilla
·       2 eggs
·       fruit topping of your choice

PREPARATION:
Heat oven to 325°.
Line muffin tin with foil liners. Place a vanilla wafer in each liner. In a mixing bowl, combine cream cheese, vanilla, and sugar; beat until well blended. Beat in eggs until blended. Pour cream cheese mixture over wafers, filling each liner about 3/4-full. Bake for 25 minutes.
Top with preserves, fresh sliced fruit, pie filling, sugared pecans, toasted coconut, or shaved chocolate. (I used fresh cut kiwi and blueberries.)

Ridiculously easy, and pretty darn tastey too! :-)

Photo Editing: Creating a High Contrast B+W Image

Sometimes black and white images just don't have enough contrast and drama. :-) I by no means am a Photoshop guru, but I do have my way of doing things that seem to work pretty well. Here below is how I took this sneak peek shot from Nicki's bridal and created the more contrasted b/w image.
1. The first image is the original shot, straight out of my camera, open in Photoshop CS3.
2. The second image is the same shot, desaturated. This is just for you to see the difference in the contrasting b/w versus the plain ol' PS desaturation. Since I am not a huge fan of PS's b/w, I have created my own version with a little more warmth (check out the last photo to see the difference in color).
3. Go back to the original image. Duplicate the layer, (if you are not sure what this means, do a little bit of research and play around with it. Layers will rock your world!) and play with curves to get a more high contrast image. This takes some practice and time to figure out what works and what doesn't. Once you get the hang of it, you can create your own action so you don't have to spend 5 minutes every time tweaking curves. (If you don't know what actions are, check out a tutorial online. This is a huge time saver!)
4. Then duplicate the layer, desaturate, and play with curves to get a warmer black/white image. Up the levels slightly of yellow, red, and magenta. You can also get a much prettier sepia color than the PS default action, which in my opinion is kind of yucky.
There are a million and one ways to do just about everything in PS, but this is the way that I work, so I thought I would share. :-) If anyone knows of a good online tutorial for layers or actions in PS, please comment and leave a link!

2 Easy Tips to Improve a Photo

People always ask me for ways to take a better photograph with their point & shoot camera. Here are 2 simple tips I hope will help.
1. Turn off the flash. Compare the below photographs both right out of my camera- the top with flash, and the lower photo the flash has been turned off. This is not a hard and fast rule, but it will almost always give you a different result.
2. Simplify the background. Pick a space that doesn't distract from your subject. Both photos were shot on the same wall, but I just picked a different section that did not include lines.
On a different note, what do YOU want to see on my blog? More photography tips? More recipes? Craft ideas? Music suggestions? Personal stories? Or should I just stick to posting photos from my sessions? :-) Comment and let me know your thoughts! Happy Monday!

Banana Bread & Better Blogging

So two of the things that I am going to try to get better at are baking/cooking more often (this no longer includes a Digorno pizza), and blogging more interesting things than simply photos. What better way than sharing a super yummy banana bread recipe that I found yesterday? It was great as a dessert last night, and I may have had a few pieces this morning. :-) I am all about simple + easy recipes, so here it is...

INGREDIENTS
  • 2 ripe bananas, smashed
  • 1/3 cup melted butter
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans
  • 10 oz drained crushed pineapple

METHOD
Preheat the oven to 350°F. With a wooden spoon, mix butter into the mashed bananas in a large mixing bowl. Mix in the sugar, egg, and vanilla. Sprinkle the baking soda and salt over the mixture and mix in. Add the flour last, mix. Pour mixture into a buttered 4x8 inch loaf pan. Bake for 1 hour. Cool on a rack. Remove from pan and slice to serve.
I changed the original recipe to add pineapple and pecans, but you can find the original HERE

Th S Girls

B + W

As of lately I have been really drawn to black and white images. There is something so timeless and elegant about it. So simple. Take almost any photograph, pop it into b+w, and it ups it's awesome factor x 10. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE color, but there is just something about b+w. Just thought I would share my latest obsession. :-)
